Delay No. 2 - 28th & 29th of July 2006

Today our plane is supposed to take off at approx 1pm to Toronto (30 minute stop over) with a connecting flight to New York.

As we have to be at the airport 90 minutes prior to take off we decided to sleep in and not see any more of Beijing.

We get up, have breakfast and take a taxi to the airport. When we check in we receive the news that our plane has been delayed by over 5 hours. This completely F%&ks are flight to New York. At this point we are flying with Air Canada. All I can say is NEVER FLY WITH AIR CANADA! They gave us meal vouchers for lunch and dinner at the airport but the meals were very average. Internet access at the airport would have cost me 100 rmb or about $17 aud unlimited. Too expensive and at that point I didnt have much to write and was not in a good mood.

We got free accommodation in Toronto because they could not put us on another plane until the next day. This meant one less day in New York which we were not very happy about. The accommodation at Toronto was 5 minutes away from the airport but a good 30 minutes away from the centre of Toronto. I was way too tired to do anything other than go to bed. Richard took a taxi in to Toronto for a look. He said it was nothing special, Auckland (NZ) is better. He took a couple of photos. It had an area that looked a bit like Docklands in Melbourne.

Disaster struck in the morning at Toronto airport. It was 5.30 in the morning, we had very little sleep. First I was harassed by a rude customs officer. He was so rude to me, demanding what I was doing in Canada. Telling me if I wanted to go to New York I would have been better off driving there. Was AIR CANADA going to pay for that? I dont think so. Half the time I could not understand what he was saying because of his thick american/canadian accent. It was hard to believe we were both speaking the same language. When I couldnt understand him he got frustrated and more rude towards me. It was hell!

Straight after this we approached what looked like an xray scanner for all our hand lugguage. Richard had already put all his stuff through including wallet, mobile and ticket. I was tired and extremely flustered by the customs officer so I just followed what he was doing. It wasnt the xray scanner but another place to check in lugguage (not carry on lugguage). All our belongs, including cash were gone.

There was no airport staff there to help us. We thought this was really poor. When we approached the lady at the desk she was completely rude to us. We were freaking out and all she could say was "you"re not following me, how will you know where to go if your not folling me" Stupid Canadian b%cth! She also carried on about our inability to read signs. The signs were small & not the clearest. She said this happens several times a day. Doesnt that go to prove that the airport staff at check-in are not doing a very good job?????

All our stuff was returned by the bagguage handlers and they were very kind to us. More honest than bagguage handlers in Australia if you believe Schapelle"s story.

The plane flight was long but we were glad to be out of the airport at Toronto
